Hope you had liked my previous blog on the art of blue pottery. Today, I will share with you how to bring in some non-toxic, eco-friendly elements to your kitchen and build a sustainable lifestyle. There is no meal that compares to one made in the heart of your own home, or especially to one made and served with earth-friendly values on the mind. However, in a busy world, many of us find ourselves short on time to prepare meals for our families, friends, or even just ourselves. Not to mention, short on time to stop and think of the environmental impacts we could be making in our kitchens. The consideration of this impact need not be burdensome, however! With just a single investment into cookware, serveware or dinnerware you can change the way your serve every meal.
Before the wooden spoon was made popular by the Romans and the Anglo-Saxons, people used items such as wooden sticks or flat rocks to handle their food. Soon, they realised that there were more efficient ways of handling food if they could design something with a wider surface area as compared to a stick or a flat rock. This realisation led to the invention of the wooden spoon, which in turn led to the creation of a lot of other types of wooden tableware, such as plates, forks, and glasses. Before industrialism took over the world and machines were introduced to markets, every product was meticulously handcrafted. Wooden serveware often featured intricately carved designs which would look aesthetic to the eye.
Since ancient times, wood has been a popular option for some cooking utensils, such as spoons and spatulas. Even today a lot of people prefer wood over other options, because of both traditional and practical reasons. There are a number of advantages of using wooden kitchenware compared to stainless steel or plastic. Here are some of them:
Wooden Utensils won’t Scratch Your Cookware
Wooden utensils are soft and very gentle in use with the most delicate cooking surfaces. One of the distinct advantages of wooden spatulas is that they are not going to scratch the finish on your non-stick coatings. They also won’t scratch your cast iron or stainless steel pots and compared to metal utensils, they are better to use.
Wooden Serveware don’t Conduct Heat
Another reason that wooden utensils are superior to metal utensils is that they don’t conduct heat. If you leave a wooden spoon in the hot pot for a long time, the handle will still stay cool. With a metal spoon, you’ll end up with a burned hand. The plastic spoon will melt if it stirs something really hot or it rests on the side of a hot pan.
Another plus for the wooden utensils is that wood is nonreactive and won’t leech harmful chemicals into your food. Wooden utensils won’t react with the acids in foods and leave a metallic taste.
Another benefit of wooden kitchen tools is that they look fabulously beautiful and elegant. The creative and artistic design of wooden utensils gives a beautiful vintage appearance to the kitchen. Handcrafted wooden serveware is truly unique functional works of art that make wonderful gifts.
These utensils are very durable, and as long as you take proper care of them, you can expect them to give you long service. Take a look at two cutting boards, one wood, and the other plastic. Which one shows the most wear and tear? The plastic one, every time. True, they both show cut marks, but unlike the wooden chopping board, the plastic board looks and feels “hairy,” thanks to all the little bits of plastic that your knives remove each time they make a cut. You won’t see this on a wooden board, nor will you see stains. A little sanding from time to time can help remove burn marks and stains if any.
Germs and Bacteria don’t Like Wood
Research indicates that the wood appears to have natural germ-killing properties. It has been proven that germs and bacteria grow much faster on plastic and metal than on wooden kitchenware surfaces.
Environmentally Responsible Choice
Most importantly wooden products are eco-friendly and sustainable. Conscious individuals can choose wooden utensils with confidence. Wood is a natural and renewable resource and more environmentally responsible choice. We can help save our environment by using kitchen utensils that are made from renewable, biodegradable and non-toxic substances.
